Beaux Pregnancy Diary: 5 Pregnancy MUST reads

Winter Neutrals || The Beaux Journals

Hiiiiii cuties!!! Merry Christmas!!

I am focusing on "Nourishment" (aka my mantra this pregnancy) so in the first installation of a few upcoming "nourishing" posts, I wanted to share some really stellar online reads I have come across and greatly valued bc they've added a level of community that I was missing so badly esp. in the beginning of my pregnancy!

SooOOoooo...I am an American living abroad in London and don't have any of my close friends currently embarking on the same journey to motherhood as me atm (which is a-ok! I've sort of always marched to the beat of my own drum anyway so I'm not too nostalgic or romantic about not having a group right out the gate)...but I have sort of had to create my own group of digital 'friends' (is it friendship if its one sided, she asks herself in a cool way) via birth stories & articles written and told by women I don't personally know. And to be honest, it has been incredible. (And yes, making mom-to-be friends IRL is still on my 'to-do' list haha.)

Here are some really great articles written by fellow moms-to-be that have struck a chord for me in some capacity...but tbh I think they are relevant for any period in a woman's life. I highly recommend all of these.

The Beaux List of Great Maternity Reads

30 days of maternity wear by Leandra Medine. What a g. (G for genius)

Pandora Sykes and Leandra Medine on Pregnancy. Love hearing two well-spoken and empowered women chat about the realities of pregnancy. I really liked when Leandra said she is careful on how she talks to herself bc she is creating a whole hew nervous system.

Leandra's pregnancy announcement. On how "being thrown off course" actually wasn't off course at all and that she hasn't "graduated from compassion."

Katherine Ormerod's words on a very similar first trimester experience to me; made me feel less alone.

Xochi Balfour's observations on her first trimester and letting go of what no longer serves. Loved it loved it loved it. (She also helped me find my doula, and I am forever grateful!)

In addition to the above, I also read an incredible instagram caption from a woman who B-L-E-W my mind today. It touched on her difficult background, and how pregnancy/motherhood/breastfeeding completely obliterated the unacceptable view that a woman's body and her breasts are for men/sex/porn, not for babies (aka something that is widely imposed on women from every direction.) So much shame is put on a woman for exposing her breast in public to feed her baby but it is glorified when it is exposed to benefit a man's sexual satisfaction. I love how breastfeeding empowered her to see her body as her own. I also love how she has determined her own journey in motherhood: "Its because of {the above} that I choose to normalize something that was not normal for me growing up" and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT.

Non sequitur jumping over to maternity style!

I remember reading in my first weeks of pregnancy from quite a few fellow mom-to-be bloggers about how they were like omg buy as little as you can!! and I was like ok got it. LOCK IT DOWN ashley. Watch how little I will buy.

But then as I started to lose all my pre-pregnancy pants to my bump and suddenly the hair-tie trick on the buttons worked no more, I realised...ummm ok so I actually need to buy at least 7 new pairs of pants. And t-shirts that fit over my bump. And new underpants and slightly bigger bras bc now I have very large tatas. And new pajamas bc the elastic on my pjs was really starting to hurt my bump. And new yoga pants (again, elastic band pains) and tops (so that my top stays over my bump in downward dog.) And loungewear in general.

As I have begun to fill out my maternity wardrobe (YES, NEW CLOTHES (AND *ENOUGH* NEW CLOTHES) HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE)...I have realised that these bloggers were talking about investing in expensive pieces that would only fit them temporarily during their pregnancy. Like a new Blaze Milano blazer...yes, ok that’s on my life wishlist.  But tbh I don’t invest in pieces like that atm anyway bc I’m just not at that place at my life where I can. But I have bought 12 new pairs of pants (topshop and asos make nice non skinny options...more a la Levis), a few yoga pants (gap also makes decent ones), some joggers, maternity tees, cool/comfy long turtleneck dresses for xmas (from la redoute and isabella oliver), soft bras (my favourite Skin from netaporter) and maternity underpants (from Oysho) and pjs (again via Oysho) and it has made all the difference.

((The only thing that was a freebie for me was that I already had a penchant and proclivity to lean towards oversized sweaters and masculine coats pre-pregnancy so I had accrued quite a collection of the perfect pregnancy winterwear wardrobe, by complete accident! Woooo! Sometimes things are not the worst. Haha.))

Now here I am taking a cue from the unexpected maternity style icon Lenny Kravitz who wore a blanket once as a scarf and everyone flipped the f out. On a particularly bitter December day roughly 25 weeks pregnant...I did the same. But with a really cozy one from Boden. And it was a little less rock star and little more neutral. Ironically, I am also wearing my only pair of skinny maternity jeans (very rock and roll) bc all of my cool straight leg ones arrived literally the day after I shot this. So I see myself, I hear myself, and this is me wearing skinny maternity jeans!

Also, if any of you have found great articles on pregnancy or motherhood, I would absolutely LOVE to hear bc it's always nice to have four eyes (or more!) out there rather than two....😘 😘 😘
